Healing from Trauma

what is emdr?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy works with the brain's natural healing abilities, which are typically most active during sleep. When we experience trauma - whether a single incident or ongoing complex trauma - these natural healing mechanisms can become overwhelmed. As a result, traumatic memories may remain "unprocessed" in both our minds and bodies, stored as intense emotional and physical sensations without the coherent narrative structure that helps us heal. This incomplete processing often manifests as unexplained emotional dysregulation, including feelings of fear, anxiety, or anger that seem to arise without clear cause.

The breakthrough came when psychologist Francine Shapiro discovered that bilateral eye movements, similar to those occurring during REM sleep, could help reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories when performed while focusing on those memories. EMDR therapy builds on this insight, not only helping to decrease the emotional charge of traumatic memories but also enabling individuals to develop a clearer understanding of their experiences and related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through this guided reprocessing, the therapy helps transform raw traumatic memories into more manageable, integrated experiences.

what is an emdr session like?

EMDR therapy incorporates different forms of bilateral stimulation - alternating movements or sensations that engage both sides of the body through visual, tactile, or auditory means. The therapy begins with a resourcing phase, where you'll work with your therapist to develop and strengthen emotional regulation skills using slow bilateral movements. These self-soothing techniques are practiced during sessions and become tools you can use in your daily life.

When moving into the desensitization and reprocessing phase, the bilateral stimulation becomes more rapid while you focus on traumatic memories. Your therapist carefully guides this process, ensuring you remain within your emotional comfort zone and maintaining a safe, controlled environment. Each session concludes with grounding exercises, helping you return to a calm, regulated state before leaving the therapeutic space.
